Evonik Launches Plastic-Free Paper Bag for MetAMINO

German specialty chemicals company Evonik has introduced a new 25kg paper bag for its MetAMINO® (DL-methionine) product. This new packaging completely removes the plastic film layer.

The Animal Nutrition team at Evonik has been working for years to reduce plastic use in packaging for MetAMINO and other feed ingredients. The new paper bag is now being used at Evonik’s Antwerp plant in Belgium, with plans to expand to plants in Singapore and Mobile, USA.

According to Evonik, the new double-layer paper bag meets EU recycling standards and can be recycled as a pure paper bag. It also complies with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to increase recycling rates.

At the Antwerp plant, the switch is expected to save 32 tons of polyethylene each year and reduce packaging-related CO₂ emissions by 20%.

The new packaging has passed strict tests and keeps MetAMINO stable and effective, with no impact on its 36-month shelf life.

Dr. Dirk Hoehler, Head of the Amino Acids business at Evonik Animal Nutrition, said: “Packaging plays an important role in reducing CO₂ emissions and supporting a resource-efficient circular economy. It must protect the product well, but also be as environmentally friendly as possible.”
